On the first day of Lent

Today has been one of the most productive days I've had in some time. It's only 10 after 5 & I've already finished all my homework, run my errands, gone to mass & completed my workout for the day. Oh, I cleaned my apartment too.

Yesterday I was about apprehensive about today. I only have one class on Mondays and Wednesdays. It's early in the morning, leaving the rest of my day to study and take care of whatever needs to be taken care of. While having a free day sounds great, having a free day the first day I give up Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr/Flickr sounds daunting. It means lots of free time to think about social media, to dream about it, to wonder what my "friends" are up to.

I say "friends" because many of the people in my social media network I haven't spoken to in person for years. That's not to say I dislike them, it's just to say that if there were no Facebook etc, we wouldn't communicate at all. Life has carried us in different directions as it is often prone to do.

Anyways, today did not end up being quite as stressful as I believed. Sure in class I was tempted to check Facebook. I opened my browser with the intention to check it several times. Before entering anything, I closed my browser or found something else to do. I answered emails promptly, even applying for an internship and an opportunity to shadow in-house counsel.

Without being able to check Facebook etc. every five minutes, my homework took significantly less time than normal. I found myself wanting to study more: what the heck else was I going to do with my time? I mean, the homework has to get done and without the excuse of social media I was able to actually focus. Are there other ways to procrastinate? Of course there are. But I have to say, I like this feeling of actually having accomplished so much with my day before 6 PM. Now I can relax and enjoy my evening.
